Tenacity is beautiful, one of my favourite traits to observe in an employee or child. It is a delightful sight to see.

Resilience is what we all seek in 2021. Resilience relies on the capacity to find agency in the face of adversity. What trait gets us there more commonly than a healthy tenacity. Furthermore, with each opportunity to navigate our way through the lessons of an adverse event, we build the foundation to connect more and more dots and develop wisdom. HOW is a big question on which we will all want to reflect! How do we become more resilient? Ultimately, what is needed to sustain and expand the resilience we gain in this VUCA world?

First, the year started the theme of resilience by exploring love, however, in February I shifted to peace, then on to courage.

2021 theme: resilience
July topic: Tenacity
Weekly Foci included:

  2. About what are we so passionate;;

  4. persisting in the quest.

“Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.”   ― F. Scott Fitzgerald

Resilience is enhanced when each of us is willing to stand up when the circumstances all for a challenge to the status quo. Frankly, that is more often needed than we would like to believe. AND, it is how the right things change and evolve over time.

NEW FORMAT THIS YEAR

Check out January’s blog to learn how to use this format to support your own journey of growth.

What surfaced through the month?

In the first week,

I found myself into an exploration of when I find myself leaning into my tenacity and when I seek my clients and others doing the same. What are the moments when tenacity serves us? Knowing this, for me anyway, helps me use this trait wisely.

In the second week,

my thoughts went to the conditions that called for tenacity. In other words, about what am I so passionate that I it is tenacity well utilized.

Week three,

brought up thoughts about the decision on whether to deploy a process to fuel tenacity or a series of goals. This was a see-saw ride that really landed me on the belief that tenacity is beautiful.

Week four,

was a bit darker. I got caught examining how self-doubt can cloud our vision and concluded that a healthy tenacity may be the fuel for the persistence needed in those moments.

This Month’s Reflective Questions

Weekly reflective questions for July:

  1. ONE: what conditions do I need to maximize my capacity to be tenacious?
  2. TWO: about what am I so passionate that I don’t feel the blisters?
  3. THREE: how do I generate my capacity for tenacity when it is most critical?
  4. FOUR: when does my tenacity show up as stubborn willfulness and when do I need to employ it in the face of self doubt?

Persistence Stands Out

Week four’s newsletter, Tenacity is one antidote to Self-Doubt  and I begin my personal exploration of self-doubt and commitment to apply tenacity in response.

My favorite Insight for the month

Self-doubt will rise up at some point so being ready for it is wise. Moreover, as I explored this theme I was reminded of how beautiful tenacity in action really is AND how we will never be fully immune from the self doubt.

Furthermore, it was powerful to realize how, at this very moment, I am experiencing the debilitating impact of self-doubt for the first time in my life. I have often guided direct reports and clients through this by supporting them in the discovery of how common the feeling is. Even as I would help them see it, I felt like a fraud since I hadn’t personally experienced it. I am thankful for the opportunity to fight through it even as I laugh about the possibility it may be an example of some kind of KARMA!
